First released domestically on May 19th, 1999, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace opened to a mixed bag of reviews, with George Lucas’ much-hyped prequel movie failing to live up to the almost impossible levels of expectations set by the original Star Wars trilogy 16 years prior. Yet despite not scaling the heights of its predecessor, Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, The Phantom Menace did make some inspired casting decisions that have iconically endured in contemporary culture. Loyalty and loyalty alone were hardly enough to justify picking Jabba’s castle over Tethys for an Empire/Jedi Battle Station while making Han Solo your personal padawan because…well you got Chewbacca when he finally appears again! And yes, this includes Luke Skywalker too (see our spoiler below). Of course there are even more impressive choices made later down through the decades — but where can one go from here? Well… what do we know about Poe Dameron since 1997? Who would be best suited for his role behind bars like him is out now according Kato Williams?? Or possibly Rogue One??? But still no thank.

- On this year’s May the Fourth, like clockwork, a new piece of Star Wars news dropped: a trailer for the forthcoming Disney+ show Obi-Wan Kenobi. Previous Star Wars Day announcements have included that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi would be cowriting and helming a future Star Wars movie and that General Mills would be releasing a Baby Yoda cereal. It’s also a day for all kinds of fan actions, like making crafts, doing cosplay, and holding movie marathons. But over the years, the holiday has begun to feel more and more like a marketing stunt—a former grassroots fan holiday that’s been turned into a news peg for a trailer for a show people don’t seem too jazzed about. For example you see it every time there’s an announcement on Twitter or Facebook regarding upcoming movies; each one features your favorite (and oft-disappeared) characters in goofy outfits wearing costumes drawn by their very first appearances from The Dark Knight Rises ‒or worse still, something entirely unrelated… such as Christopher Nolan creating Batman themed shirts back at CinemaCon 2005. You’ll think “oh no I hate Chris Nolan! My love affair with him waned after he made his own films!” And when those projects are finally revealed? Well they get announced anyway because some celebrity wants them, just ask Madonna
- The upcoming novel Star Wars: The Princess and the Scoundrel by Beth Revis, set after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, will feature the wedding of Han and Leia — a well-deserved moment of joy after years of fighting. But when duo embarks on their honeymoon aboard the luxury Halcyon starcruiser, they find that the battle with the Empire is far from over. StarWars.com is excited to reveal the gorgeous, fully-painted cover by Oliver Cuthbertson, showing that while our favorite nerf herder and rebel princess are very much in love, danger still lurks. Check it out below. “I wanted to do something different for my first book based off another popular video game series,” said Revs. “We knew we were looking at people who would have enjoyed playing games similar enough as mine did not get many opportunities! They grew up under Disney’s influence where everything was about entertainment.” After being introduced during preorder giveaways, this stunning full color copyof Ewan McGregor’sanderson/Princess Bride’ trilogy goes beyond what has been shown sofar; featuring characters fans can identify – including Ben Solo, Jake Sully (a beloved character among gamers), Admiral Ackbar
- Chen’s new book takes place in an interesting spot in the Star Wars canon: the moment after the Battle of Geonosis in Attack of the Clones, but before the events of the 2008 Clone Wars film which launched the famous series. In other words, this is a story about Anakin and Obi-Wan before Ahsoka but after the war breaks out. And for Mike Chen, the whole purpose of this book is to create a kind of Clone Wars “movie” that he wished had existed during the run of prequels. But how do you tell such a tale without having everyone involved? I reached by email last month with Mira Sorvino—who directed both The Force Awakens trilogy (including its 2015 spinoff) as well – who told me her thoughts on what she’s doing here, including whether or not it qualifies under Lucasfilm Studios’ editorial guidelines relating specifically too much plot divergence between films from different media companies. “We really don’t have clear rules when we’re making movies,” said Sorvarine, whose experience works perfectly within Marvel Cinematic Universe standards governing continuity since these are shared universes created through cohabitation across multiple screens worldwide at once

Sure, there are other conventions, other events that bring people together. But Star Wars Celebration feels like more. It feels like a homecoming. Whether it’s your first time or fourteenth time, you immediately feel at home. I remember walking into the lobby of the Orlando convention center for my first Celebration, Star Wars Celebration V, and despite the long lines, jostling crowds, sold out merchandise…it felt familiar. As an observer from The New York Times who took in all these things firsthand—this is what we live to see! That was when those two days truly became part-time timesavers: not just one day as they were last year but three whole weeks while Lucasfilm worked on new material; then several months before release being put through some final maintenance checks by Disney Studios General Manager Alan Horn (in honor), whose eye shepherded them towards everything going right with filming Return Of Jedi so many years ago …and finally taking place this weekend —for me back in 2011 here’s how easy any occasion can be compared once again under such circumstance
