Lady Gaga recorded a sequence for “Joker: Folie à Deux” in New York City over the weekend, transforming the city into Gotham City.
Many set photographs of Gaga going through a swarm of extras and actors dressed in Gotham police uniforms began circulating on Getty Images and social media on Saturday.
The singer and actress is shown in the photos wearing clown makeup, a red blazer, a black-and-white top, a black miniskirt, and patterned black tights. A few background performers wearing clown masks and wigs are also apparent. Others are carrying protest posters that say things like “Free Joker” and “Joker Marry Me.”
In the highly anticipated sequel to 2019’s “Joker,” Gaga is widely slated to play cackling villain Harley Quinn. Though Warner Bros. and DC Studios have not revealed Gaga’s role in the picture, she stated last summer that she had been cast as the female lead alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck.
“Folie à Deux,” unlike the original “Joker” film, will be a musical. According to an Instagram post by director Todd Phillips, not much else has been revealed about the plot of the sequel, which will begin production in December 2022. Phillips promoted the project by sharing a still of Gaga and Phoenix grasping each other’s faces on Valentine’s Day.
“Joker” was nominated for 11 Oscars in 2020, winning for lead actor (Phoenix) and original score (Hildur Gunadóttir). In 2019, Phoenix told The New York Times that he urged Phillips to begin work on a sequel during the second or third week of filming “Joker” because there was “far too much to explore.”
“It would have to have some conceptual resonance like [‘Joker,'” Phillips told The Times in 2019.
“Because I believe that’s ultimately why the film connected, it’s what’s going on beneath the surface.” Many films are about the spark, but this one is about the powder. That would be intriguing if you could recreate that in real life.”
