When he hasn’t been busy trying to forge a solid new ending to Neon Genesis Evangelion over the past decade, legendary director Hideaki Anno has stopped living his nerd dream, helping to animate cinema with Godzilla , Ultraman and now Kamen Rider next year . So he’s taking the next step naturally: bringing them together for a new collaborative project.
Announced overnight, Anno’s khara studio will be partnering with Ultraman’s Tsuburaya Productions, Godzilla‘s Toho, and Kamen Rider’s Toei to develop Shin Japan Heroes Universe, a four-way crossover that merges the director’s work on television “rebuild” Evangelion – titled Shin Evangelion Gekijōban in Japan – with his collaboration with Shinji Higuchi on 2016’s Rug Godzilla, the new Shin Ultraman is scheduled for release in Japan this year and is expected to be released later this year. his upcoming solo project in 2023 Shin Kamen Rider. Little is known about what the project actually is, other than the website describing it as “large scale” and “dream collaboration” representing four of Japan’s most iconic heroes.
It could be as simple as a merchandising campaign, using beautiful artwork for the new website designed by Mahiro Maeda, seen above, or Yutaka Izubuchi’s new logo for the project. It could be a series of related events before Shin Ultraman’s May 13 release this year, and Shin Kamen Rider’s own in March 2023. Or Ultraman could tag in Unit 01 to stab Neronga. or millions of other Kaiju shortly or we could watch 50 years of Kamen Rider emerge through portals like Avengers: Endgame on steroids to defeat Gendo Ikari. For now, Anno and his collaborators on the project are keeping quiet about what the Shin Japan Hero Universe will be about, aside from being huge (we hope so, at least if Godzilla is invited to the party!), and that details will be announced soon.
