In addition to showing off roughly five minutes of moment-to-moment action, the clip offered a glimpse at Battle League’s roster. Among other Mushroom Kingdom stalwarts, the game stars Mario, his infinitely more suave brother Luigi, their tax-evading pal Yoshi, and the terminally neglected Waluigi. Even Rosalina, a relative newcomer to Nintendo’s royal class, having been introduced in 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy, is part of the crowd. But Daisy—who, for the record, has been around since the ‘80s—is still nowhere to be seen. Nintendo finally started telling us that they’ll have support for playable characters from many platforms during 2017’s E3 press conference…but not until August or September! - It’s no secret that Mario and his buddies, while looking ostensibly humanoid, aren’t really human. One trip to New Donk City in Super Mario Odyssey should quickly disabuse you of any notion that the “Italian” plumber is anything but a facsimile of humanity as we know it. Mario, Peach, and crew may be mammals, what with the nipples and all, but they’re some sort of fucked-up mammal where the females evolved to not need teeth. Of course, as suggested by my Kotaku editors, maybe it’s all about diet. Daisy is from an entirely different country, after all (Super Mario Land’s Sarasaland, for the youngsters out there). Hell, maybe everyone in the Mushroom Kingdom gets their nutrients from an easily digestible slime rather than something that needs chewing. You can’t hear me right now but I’m barely stifling a scream with my fist
- Fan blowback to games that aren’t out yet is often premature and misguided, but the reaction here makes sense. Daisy, after all, was a mainstay in both previous iterations, Super Mario Strikers for the GameCube and Mario Strikers Charged for the Wii. Plus, as a representative for the We Are Daisy fan wiki (WAD) told Kotaku, the Strikers series “is where Daisy’s personality shines the best.” (Yes, Daisy is so popular she has her own fan wiki.) That’s not to mention how she’s become a staple in other Nintendo sports games, including Mario Tennis and Mario Golf: Super Rush. Leaving her out of Battle League is erasure. “Daisy has a particularly strong fanbase,” Yves Bourgelas, a comic artist and a huge Daisy fan, told Kotaku. “There have been moments in the past, like Super Mario 3D World or Smash Bros. for the 3DS, where her absence caused some sort of upheaval in the community.”
- Before the release of Super Mario Odyssey, we made an announcement trailer for the game where Mario leapt from a manhole and ran around a CG New York-like city. The concept of the video was to have an animated Mario contrasted against a realistic, lifelike cityscape. As the effect designer on the project, this created many challenges for me. When Mario runs in Super Mario Odyssey, a small white cloud of smoke appears under him. Senior colleagues of mine often say “effects are like glue” that also hold things together when things in the game interact with each other. When Mario throws his hat and it hits an enemy, things like stars pops up to visually let you know that you’ve hit the target. When Mario interacts with the ‘real’ world, the big problem was choosing which of the two art styles the visual effects should resemble. Should we choose an effect that resembles the animated Mario? If so, it wouldn’t match the realistic city, and the same could be said for the reverse. To solve this problem, ideas were taken from both themes and blended together.

Super Mario Sunshine has a somewhat dubious reputation among Nintendo fans, but I can say with absolute sincerity that it’s my favorite of Mario’s 3D adventures. Part of this is personal bias due to the fact that it was the first video game I ever owned (I was so young that I remember being scared by the silly little mud enemies), so it imprinted itself onto me early, but it’s also a game that I’ve revisited many times over the years and have come to appreciate more each time. As for why, there are a multitude of reasons, so let’s get into it.Perhaps Super Mario Sunshine’s most divisive aspect was its devotion to one particular theme. Where previous Mario games saw you traverse the Mushroom Kingdom across a wide array of biomes, Super Mario Sunshine dedicated itself to a single tropical motif, as the whole thing was set around a vacation gone awry. While some found the beach resort limiting or same-y, I always viewed it as a plus, as I was really impressed at how much Nintendo managed to squeeze out of this one theme. It’s got hotels, an industrial area, a haunted house, coral reefs, and of course, beaches. Super Mario Sunshine didn’t concern itself with being a kingdom-spanning epic. Instead, it was content to be what its premise promised all along: a vacation.
