14 Stylish Men Who Made Gucci Loafers Iconic

In this life, there are a few undebatable truths: beer is delicious, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all-time, and Gucci loafers are the universal symbol of leisurely elegant style. When the shoes first hit shelves in the 1950s, high-class jet-setters traveled to places like Rome and Florence to get their hands on a pair, but soon after, Gucci—and their signature horse-bit buckle footwear—went global. Through the ’70s and ’80s they were sported by disco-dancers and high-powered executives alike. Then, in the early ’90s, they became the de facto “get shit done” shoes of Wall St.’s power-suit generation. (In fact, they even earned the nickname “deal sleds” amongst certain groups.) And though they’ve always been one of our favorite easy-to-wear and easier-to-kick-off options, they’ve recently been rejuvenated by Gucci’s new creative director, Alessandro Michele. He’s updated the classic with a sleeker shape (and some occasional fur) which make them perfect for both modern, slim tailoring as well as Michele’s retro-inspired flare-bottom trousers. The point is, if you don’t have ’em already, there’s no better time than now to pick up a pair of  Gucci loafers. Here are some men who have worn them well throughout the years.

Michael Sheen as David Frost in Frost/Nixon (2008)
“I suppose a man in your profession can get away with something like that,” Frank Langella’s Richard Nixon says of David Frost’s Gucci Loafers in Frost/Nixon. And though Nixon was trying to throw Frost off his game with that line, we agree—it does take a certain kind of swagger to pull off these iconic shoes.

Even though Franco gets paid to wear Gucci, there’s no doubt he’s got a handle on which version of the loafers—here, a chocolate brown suede—look best with a light blue suit.

In the Wolf of Wall Street-era ’80s and early ’90s, Gucci loafers became the power shoe to match with power suits. We can’t lie, they look damn good with pinstripes and suspenders.

Shia LaBeouf as Jake Moore in Wall Street 2 (2010)
Even today, young guns of the stock market turn to the Gucci loafers as a symbol of swagger (and well, money), as Shia’s character in Wall St. 2 demonstrated. Of course, off screen, you’re more likely to catch LaBeouf in a pair of army boots and a ripped tee than in some hard-bottom shoes.
